BIKE LAW 101
For the past few years I have been presenting a “talk” to bike clubs and groups, which has morphed into a “Continuing Legal Education” class for lawyers & Judges. I call it …well… I call it a lot of things… but mostly I call it BIKELAW 101.
I delve into the History of the BIKE- it is a very VISUAL Powerpoint that starts on Day 1, with Karl Von Draise’s two-wheeled “hobby horse” invention and moves through the BoneShaker and the Penny Farthing and MANY other colorful and unique wheeled mobility devices before settling on The Safety.
I talk about how the BIKE CHANGED THE WORLD. How the Bike impacted Culture… Society… the Law… How the Bike fueled the Women’s Movement back in the 80s… um.. that’d be the EIGHTEEN EIGHTIES…
I use all of that to try to help folks understand the PASSION we bring to Cycling today… not just racing … or touring… or doing…whatever it is …hipsters on fixies do… no… I try to get to the fundamental question… the basic core of the DNA that drives us to ride… Here it is…

That’s it… you get on the bike and it’s FUN… it’s fun to move about … it’s fun to coast… there’s nothing un-fun about it…

We’re getting ready to start filming some little snippets…trying to stay under 5 minutes… The Five Minute BikeLawyer… these YouTube-y type videos will briefly cover a topic…maybe “What does AFRAP mean?” or a look at a recent crash or case. I’ll try to use the PPT materials I have to make them as VISUAL as possible so you don’t have to look at a my talking head too long.
Next, we’ll tape a longer, deep dive discussion in a podcast type format… this will a 15-20 minute discussion or the topic, much as I would do at a seminar or lecture or Bike Club presentation.
Finally, we’re just now starting work on The BikeLawyer’s BIG Book of Bike Law. It will be about OHIO law, since that it what I know the most about. I’ll provide references to other bike books and websites where you can check out other state stuff.
I was thinking about doing a POP UP book but our Art Department here at the Bike Lawyer’s World HQ and Publishing Company said …. ummm…no… it’s a downloadable PDF…
So then I thought, “OK, I’ll write it in Suessian Pentameter…” But again, this was shot down by … well… EVERYBODY…despite this mock-up of a possible page of the book
OH… and the website will soon be tweaked to accommodate all this NEW STUFF…
OH OH OH…and the Bike Book will be a FREE PDF DOWNLOAD on the website.
WHEN …you ask…WHEN WHEN WHEN can we see this?
I dunno… we just thought of it … but I’m so excited I wanted to stare…shooting for YEAR END. .. so maybe it’ll be my present to you for the holidays…
